Catasticta pharnakia pharnakia
Uncommon 1050-1500 m. Puddles and visits flowers.
Similar species: Distinctive; compare with some Pereute species.
Catasticta corcyra
Uncommon 1000-1700 m. Usually seen patrolling over roads or creeks at treetop level; occasionally puddles. I'm not sure which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: Recalls C. pieris intermedia but wings are more rounded; note also broad yellow submarginal streaks VHW and solid black DFW apex, among other differences.
Catasticta pieris intermedia
Locally common 1600-2150 m., probably higher and lower. Usually found puddling; seems to bask on leaves more often than most Catasticta.
Similar species: Distinctive; compare with C. corcyra and C. prioneris which are similarly mostly white on D.
Catasticta prioneris
Fairly common 1500-2150 m. Usually found puddling. I'm not sure which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: V washed-out looking; recalls C. ctemene strigosa but is shows much more white. D more extensively white than most; C. pieris intermedia and C. corcyra have very different V and DFW apex is patterened differently.
Catasticta ctemene strigosa
Uncommon 1500-2150 m. Puddles and visits flowers.
Similar species: D distinctive. V also unique, with little white and an overall 'smudged' look; perhaps most like C. prioneris but shows much less white.
Catasticta suasa
Fairly common 1350-1950 m. Usually found puddling. I'm not sure which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: Most similar to C. reducta boliviana but darker on both V and D.
Catasticta reducta boliviana
Fairly common 1050-2200 m. Puddles and visits flowers.
Similar species: VHW most similar to C. prioneris but much more contrasting; VFW has creamy (not white) median markings, and D very different.
Catasticta modesta
Common 1600-2950 m. Usually found puddling; also visits flowers.
Similar species: C. pinava and C. aureomaculata are similar but both are darker on V; aureomaculata also has yellow spots, not chevrons, on DHW margin. C. pillcopata (much less common) is similar on V but D has much less extensive yellow.
Catasticta pinava lucida
Fairly common 1950-2150 m., probably higher. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: V lighter than C. aureomaculata; yellow on D is lighter and less extensive than it and C. modesta. D submarginal markings smaller than C. pillcopata. Also extremely similar to male C. smithia.
Catasticta pinava pinava
Fairly common(?) 2100-2400 m. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: D markings darker and more extensive than C. p. lucida. Very similar to C. modesta; I'm not really confident separating the two but modesta may have D yellow even more extensive.
Catasticta smithia
Rare at 2150-2700 m. Puddles.
Similar species: I'm not totally confident identifying the male of this species; note the large yellow marginal markings. D has a relatively narrow yellow band and submarginal chevrons. C. pinava lucida seems very similar. Female recalls female C. collina but lacks the pair of white dashes beyond end of cell DFW.
Catasticta pillcopata
Uncommon(?) 1900-2700 m. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: Recalls several others, especially C. modesta and , C. pinava but note relatively compact yellow band on D. I'm not confident identifying this species.
Catasticta aureomaculata
Uncommon 2000-2800 m. Usually found puddling. I'm not sure which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: Marginal markings V are narrower than most similar species, especially near FW apex; only C. colla punctata has these markings narrower. Most similar is C. pinava which has wider yellow markings at VFW apex and pointed chevrons, not broad triangular spots, in DHW margin.
Catasticta leucophaea
Uncommon 1800-2100 m. Puddles. I don't know which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: Combination of light grey look to V and extensive silver on D is distinctive(?). C. manco is whiter on VHW, lacking contrasting grey in post-discal area.
Catasticta manco
Fairly common 2100-3000 m. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: V is whiter than any similar-patterned species. Similarly pale species (eg. C. poujadei lamasi, C. toca) have wavy, not jagged, marginal lines VHW.C. toca
Catasticta collina
Rare(?) 1950-2700 m. Puddles and visits flowers.
Similar species: Many similar species have yellow instead of white on D, but I'm not really confident identifying this species. Both sexes may be similar to C. smithia; female has two dashes beyond end of cell DFW which are lacking in smithia.
Catasticta colla punctata
Common 1850-2400 m.; usually found puddling.
Similar species: Very narrow yellow marginal lines at VFW apex distinctive(?); these lines are wider in C. aureomaculata, which also has more extensive yellow on D and a less well-defined white discal band VHW.
Catasticta fulva
Local and uncommon(?) 1600-1900 m. Puddles. I believe my photos represent the only Cusco records of this species (it is known from Central and Northern Peru), and the individuals do not look like the geographically closest subspecies (anaranjada, from Ayacucho); it could represent an undescribed subspecies.
Similar species: [none]
Catasticta toca
Fairly common 1600-2400 m. Usually found puddling. I'm not sure which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: The smallest Catasticta I've recorded in Cusco. V recalls C. poujadei lamasi but yellow markings are darker, has a deep red basal markings VHW, and has much more black around FW apex.
Catasticta similis
Rare at 1850 m., probably higher. Puddles.
Similar species: Very similar to the larger C. superba but on VHW marginal triangles are broader and post-discal line is straighter.
Catasticta superba
Uncommon (seasonal?) 3000-3550 m. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: See C. similis. Much larger than other similar species, and found at higher elevations; D very different.
Catasticta poujadei lamasi
Uncommon 2200-2400 m. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: V much paler than C. toca, especially around FW apex; D with much less yellow than C. marcapita marcapita.
Catasticta paucartambo
Rare at 3100-3400 m., probably confined to upper reaches of semi-humid valleys. The individual from Paucartambo shown below was floating in a ditch during rain, and may not have been puddling; I suspect this species does not puddle but probably visits flowers.
Similar species: VHW submarginal 'drumsticks' combined with D pattern is distinctive among species I've encountered. C. vilcabamba (described from remote areas of the Cordillera Vilcabamba, in north/central Cusco) is very similar but has less extensive submarginal and marginal markings DHW.
Catasticta marcapita marcapita
Rare(?) at 2800-2900 m. Visits flowers; very rarely puddles (perhaps only when freshly-emerged?).
Similar species: VHW submarginal 'drumsticks' are unlike most others. V very similar to C. paucartambo but VFW submarginal markings are chevrons; D is very different.
