Altinote anaxo comta
Fairly common 1850-2150 m.. Puddles.
Similar species: Overall pattern similar to Gnathotriche mundina mundina, but it is smaller and has an open HW cell, like all Melitaeini.
Altinote dicaeus
Common 1350-2200 m. Puddles and attracted to bait. I'm not sure which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: See A. griseata. A. hilaris hilaris has glossy black DHW, not grey-tinged as in dicaeus; V pattern is very different.
Altinote griseata
Uncommon and local(?) at 1850 m., probably higher and lower. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: Similar to A. dicaeus; DHW is greyer, and VHW lacks the warm colour tones, especially the brownish smudge in the upper discal area.
Altinote negra demonica
Common 1000-2150 m. Usually found puddling; attracted to bait. I believe females are highly variable in appearance.
Similar species: A. momina (much less common) has wide black lines entering orange between the veins DHW.
Altinote momina
Uncommon 1000-2150 m. Usually found puddling.
Similar species: Wide black streaks between veins in the orange area VHW distinguish this species from A. negra demonica.
Altinote hilaris hilaris
Fairly common 1600-2150 m. Usually found puddling; attracted to bait.
Similar species: Ornate V pattern distinctive. See also A. dicaeus.
Altinote eresia
Uncommon 1900-2700 m. Puddles; attracted to bait. I'm not sure which subspecies occur(s) in Cusco.
Similar species: V similar to A. sp.nov. but D obviously different.
Altinote sp.nov.
Locally common 3600-3800 m. Puddles and visits flowers.
Similar species: Distinctive; compare with A. eresia.
